Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. It is 3 ½ inch long and it is a tube, made of tissue. Doctors still don’t know what function it has, but we can live without it. In this case, we don’t experience any consequences. Appendicitis is a serious inflammation that requires medical treatment. Doctors will have to remove the appendix. If a person doesn’t get the medical treatment, the appendix can burst and spread the infectious material inside the body. In that case, peritonitis can occur. This is a serious infection of the peritoneum that must be treated with strong antibiotics. If not, it can be fatal.
In some cases abscess (pus-filled) can forms outside the appendix. Then, scar tissue ‘’walls off’’ from the rest of abdominal cavity. It can prevent the infection from spreading. This is a less urgent case, but it requires a surgery. You should know that all appendicitis cases are treated as an emergency. Appendicitis is very common inflammation. In the US, 1 in 15 people will get it. It usually doesn’t occur before age 2, but it occurs between 10 and 30.
Appendicitis occurs in cases when the appendix is blocked. It can be blocked by stool, cancer or a foreign body. The blockage can occur due to infection. The symptoms are:
• Loss of appetite.
• High fever.
• Dull pain in the abdomen and swelling. Later, nausea and vomiting happen.
• Pain during urination.
• Diarrhea or constipation.
• Severe cramps.
If you have any of these symptoms, or you just have an abdominal pain, you must go to a doctor. If you have appendicitis, you must have a surgery in order to solve this problem.
